What, no 2002 drivers in the region? Nobody has anything to say!!
I'm close to purchasing a '76 2002 to use as a daily driver. Any specific troublespots I should look for? The car is originally from CA with no rust. I want to keep it that way, but still drive it year-round (mostly). Anybody recommend a shop experienced at rust-proofing 2002's?
Thanks,
Jason |

I don't know if the technology today is any better with respect to rustproofing, but I have pretty much accepted that any car not built at the factory with the treated materials used for the last 12 to 15 years cannot be adaquately rustproofed.
That is, you might go to a shop and pay to have some stuff put on your car, but if you drive in the corrosive slop that our municipalities apply to the roads if there is a snowflake within 50 miles, there will be an eventual failure of the coating and it WILL rust.
If you have a truly rust free 2002, I'd spend the rustproofing money on a winter beater car that you don't care about and park that '02 in a nice dry garage during slop season. There are so many cheap disposeable cars out there, it just seems a shame to waste a 2002 driving in winter salt. _________________ Chris Holliday

I've got a 72 2002 tii. Great car, but rust works 24/7. I agree with the previous post that an '02 is not the car that you want to be driving in bad weather. Besides most people with 30+ year old cars utilize classic insurance which dictates a mileage cap of 2 or 3,000 a year. I'd prefer to use my miles for the good weather. If you have questions checkout www.bimmerforums.com , and www.2002faq.com for more '02 info. There area a few hard core '02 fans in the Philly area. Feel free to email me anytime...
